Heroes of Borderland

The tale of five wanderers whose paths converged at the gates of destiny.

This is where it begins. Five of you at the same gate, for five completely different reasons — and none of you know it yet.

Chapter · I

Golden Glimmer at the Gates

The frontier city of Borderland smells of dust, livestock, and the particular desperation of people who've run out of other options. You are at the tail of a slow-moving queue — five of you, with five completely different reasons for being here, none of which you've shared with each other. The gate is ahead. You count the coins in your pocket without looking. You already know how few there are.

The gate guards were the bored kind, which was worse than hostile. Hostility could be charmed. Boredom simply didn't care. When Aython finally reached the front and invoked his family name — House Aurelius, of the capital, surely they had heard — one guard picked at his thumbnail and the other looked somewhere past his left shoulder.

But Aython had been performing nobility since before he understood what nobility actually was. He straightened. He let silence do its work. He spoke again, slower, lower, as if granting the men a private audience. By the time he gestured at the four figures behind him, the guards were nodding before they'd consciously decided to.

In the brief stillness under the archway's shadow, all five of them stood together for perhaps the first time without moving. Aython adjusted his cloak. Vorn watched the treeline beyond the wall. Jen read the gate's crest with the idle focus of someone cataloguing exits. Anuchit stood very still, hand half-raised, as though listening to something none of the others could hear. Veranth stood slightly apart, as always. No one spoke. No one needed to. They walked through.

At the Gates of Borderland At the Gates of Borderland

You split up. First time, won't be the last. Jen, Anuchit, Veranth — temple. Aython, Vorn — nearest bar. Honestly? Both groups make sense.

Hollow Faith & The Vestry's Hidden Truths

The temple has the look of a place that once believed in itself. You move through it now — checking, cataloguing, hoping — and the candles gutter in drafts from cracks in the wall, throwing shadows across a stone deity worn smooth by hands that long predated yours. The offering dish is nearly empty. The vestry is locked. Whatever you came looking for, this place spent it long ago.

Anuchit sat in a pew near the altar and folded his hands. He was not praying — he didn't know what to pray to, or whether anything would hear — but the posture helped him think. He had survived something that should have killed him. He still didn't know why. The answer felt close in the quiet, like a word on the tip of a tongue. Jen passed behind him on her way back from the vestry. Their eyes met for half a second. She had slipped a small coin from the offering dish into her sleeve. Neither of them said anything. Some things didn't need saying.

Veranth found the scriptorium locked. When he talked the attending monk into opening it, he found three shelves of ordinary hymnals, a water-damaged codex on farming, and dust. He took a Bible from the rack by the door on the way out — not because he wanted it, but because it seemed like something a person should have if they were going to figure out the rules of a world that kept putting divine marks on people. He opened to the first page. Someone had written a name inside the front cover in careful, deliberate script. A name he couldn't place. He closed it and tucked it under his arm.

Across the city at the Drunken Dragon, noise was the opposite kind of religion. Aython was two drinks ahead of the room and climbing, the crowd around him exactly the kind that wanted to be part of something. He gave them something to be part of. Vorn had removed himself to a corner table, watching a one-handed old man who had been nursing the same drink for an hour — lifting and setting down that truncated arm with a faint look of surprise, as if the absence still caught him off guard. When Vorn sat across from him without asking, the old man didn't look up. "Lost it protecting something," he said, to no one in particular. "Thought it was worth it at the time." Vorn waited. The man didn't say more. Not yet.

When the other three arrived and joined the contest, Aython was somehow still standing at the end — barely, chin lifted against all physical evidence that he should fall. He looked at the prize in front of him, then pushed it back toward Albus. "Tonight," he said, with the careful diction of a man concentrating hard on each syllable, "everyone drinks." The crowd erupted. Aython smiled the smile of a man who understood that some investments had no financial return.

Tonight, Everyone Drinks Tonight, Everyone Drinks

The Temple of Borderland The Temple of Borderland

Tonight, Everyone Drinks Tonight, Everyone Drinks

This is the chapter where Aython commits to a lie so elaborate it has its own supporting documentation. I respect it, honestly.

Chapter · III

The Pope's Gambit & The Empty Forge

You are back at the temple, this time with the full party, this time with a plan. Vorn's approach was direct: he leaned across the vestry table, placed one hand flat on the wood, and explained to Father Flassia, in plain terms, the benefits of cooperation. Flassia stared at the hand. Then at Vorn. Then back at the hand. Nothing came out of his mouth except a faint, sustained vowel sound. You watch Aython step smoothly in front of Vorn — the way someone moves when they've done exactly this before.

What followed was a masterpiece of misdirection. Aython's voice dropped to the register of a man sharing a confidence. His family, he explained, maintained certain… relationships with the higher offices of the church. Appointments had been made. Appointments could be made again. He watched Flassia's spine straighten fraction by fraction, the exhaustion in his face replaced by something Aython recognized immediately: the dangerous brightness of a man beginning to want something. By the time Aython finished, Flassia had offered the communion wine stored for weddings, produced paper and ink, and was composing a letter of introduction to the city lord with the focused energy of someone writing their own future. Aython did not correct any of his assumptions.

The Pope's Gambit The Pope's Gambit

Jen stood at the altar performing last rites for a grieving family, mouthing words she didn't believe to a god she wasn't sure existed, while her hands made the correct gestures from long practice. She did it perfectly. That bothered her more than she expected.

Hollow Rites Hollow Rites

Veranth turned the Bible over in his hands outside the locked scriptorium and thought about the name written inside it. He'd checked — the scriptorium held nothing but ordinary texts. Whatever power this place had once possessed had long since departed, taken or spent or simply forgotten. The Bible was an ordinary book. The name in it was an ordinary name. And yet he kept thinking about it. He tucked the book away and said nothing to the others.

At the forge, the plan was simple: help Calistra with her work, earn goodwill, ask about the one-handed man's lost treasure. The execution was less simple. Within ten minutes the party had managed to misplace a set of tongs, overheat a blade Calistra had been working on for three days, and cause a minor incident involving a bucket of water and the wrong part of the furnace. Calistra pointed at the door with the quiet authority of someone who had been doing this long enough to know when to cut her losses. They went.

Right, so — Aython just spent all his prize money on a party for strangers. I'll note that for your character sheet. Under "financial decisions."

Chapter · IV

Night of Revelry & The Road to the Chaos Cave

The feast Aython paid for is consuming the Drunken Dragon from the inside out — smoke, noise, a soldier attempting a song no one knows but everyone joins. You are somewhere in the middle of it, warm and fed and briefly, genuinely at rest. The road to the Chaos Cave is waiting. It can wait a little longer. Tonight the city thinks your party is worth celebrating, and you've learned not to argue with that.

The old man was drunk enough by midnight to stop being careful. Vorn had positioned himself close without appearing to, and when the man finally leaned in and said it — a magical sword, a cave called the Chaos Cave, somewhere in the hills east of the road, somewhere almost no one came back from — Vorn listened to every word and said nothing. He turned his flask slowly in his hands after the man fell asleep in his chair. He thought about why he was still sitting at this table with these particular people. He didn't reach a conclusion. He kept turning the flask.

The Secret of Cave of Chaos The Secret of Cave of Chaos

Aython's request had been, by his own standards, entirely reasonable. He was exhausted. He was a nobleman. He wanted a bath drawn and someone to help with it, as he was accustomed to at home. What he got was two very large men with soap and purpose, sent by Albus with what Aython could only describe as enthusiasm. From the next room, Veranth watched through a crack in the door and decided to help in his own way — a minor illusion, a small act of mercy, turning the two figures into something more suited to Aython's preferences. The spell landed. The image took hold. Aython looked at what was in front of him, looked at what the illusion showed him, and something behind his eyes went quietly, completely dark. He endured the bath in silence, staring at a fixed point on the wall, while the scrubbing continued with considerable vigor. Veranth pressed his face against the doorframe to keep from making a sound. In the morning, neither of them mentioned it.

Noble Accommodation Noble Accommodation

The guide agreed to take them for twenty-five gold, a place on the carriage, and the understanding that the large man would be coming along as personal attendant. Aython shook his hand over breakfast with the practiced grace of someone closing a deal he considered entirely favorable. He was running out of money. He was always running out of money. But the road ahead existed, and the sword was there, and the party was fed and rested and moving. Some mornings that had to be enough.

The Ambush & The Dragon's Flame

The mist comes in low between the trees, and you feel the carriage slow before you hear anything. Then you hear it: the displacement of undergrowth, the careful placement of feet that don't belong to the forest. Around you, the party has gone quiet in a particular way — not relaxed quiet, but the quiet of people who have started listening. Vorn's hand moves to his bow without a word. You understand immediately.

They came from both sides at once. Prow had the measured confidence of someone who had done this many times and expected it to go as it always had — until a blade touched Aython's throat and Aython, to his credit, went very still and said nothing. That was the entire plan: freeze the talker, control the moment. It might have worked. Then Vorn exhaled.

Vorn · First Blood Vorn · First Blood

The shot crossed twenty feet and ended one of the bandits before he'd finished his first breath of the ambush. The others hesitated — that single, fatal beat — and into that hesitation Veranth stepped. Those who saw it afterward described the change in his eyes first: a shift from dark to something amber and lit from within, the pupils narrowing to vertical slits. The Fireball that left his hands was not like spells they had read about or seen demonstrated in controlled conditions. It was the color of the inside of a furnace and it made a sound like the air itself being abolished. Two bandits simply ceased to be. A third stumbled out of the radius with his clothes on fire, and Anuchit met him with the kind of efficiency that didn't leave room for drama. Vorn finished it. Jen's hands were already moving toward Veranth before the smoke cleared — the spell had cost him, visibly, the way a fire costs the wood it burns through.

Veranth · Dragon's Fire

Prow tried to use the old man as leverage, arm across his throat, backing toward the trees. Jen's disarm was precise enough that Prow looked at his own empty hand with genuine surprise. In the seconds that followed, Aython talked — smooth, warm, absolutely earnest — and watched Prow's shoulders drop by degrees. Almost. Something behind Prow's eyes was calculating even as his voice softened and his head nodded along. When the opening came, he took it without hesitation: a pivot, three steps, and the mist took him.

Anuchit · The Monk Strikes Anuchit · The Monk Strikes

Aython stood at the treeline for a moment looking at where Prow had been. Then, quietly, alone, he laughed. Not the performance laugh he used in taverns. Something smaller. The others exchanged a look. No one asked. The carriage driver had watched the entire encounter from his seat with wide eyes and hands tight on the reins. He didn't speak for another two miles. When he finally did, it was only to ask if they were close. They were.
