What He Carries
From the Fire
What He Loves
& What Unmakes Him
Loved · Quietly
- Listening to other people's stories.
- The silence of the forest and the stars.
- Helping strangers without expecting anything.
- Herbal tea on cold nights.
- Ancient books and forgotten legends.
Refused
- Compliments, thanks, and attention.
- Being asked about his past.
- Large fires. (Predictably.)
- Dragon worship and religious cults.
- Being touched unexpectedly.
Weaknesses
- Unstable emotions — when he loses control, his draconic power destroys what is near him.
- Physically fragile. The body is the wood the fire eats first.
- Afraid of being loved — pushes people away before they get close enough to be burned.
- The whisper of the dragon in his mind, in a voice he has never asked the name of.
- Carries guilt he can never forgive himself for.
The Hunters
- The Cult of Auralyx — the Amber Wyrm — believe him to be their chosen heir.
- They do not wish him dead. They wish him theirs. That is, often, worse.
- Three runners on his trail at the time of writing. He has counted four sets of footsteps.
Kael was born in a small rural village, unaware of his draconic heritage. He has no memory of his father — only that his mother, in one of her quiet moods, once spoke of a stranger with eyes like fire.
At fifteen, a surge of uncontrollable power erupted in a moment of rage. The village burned. His mother burned. The wind carried him, in the end, as far as he could walk before the legs gave.
He lived in isolation with an old hermit for six years, learning healing, self-control, and how to wear the mask of kindness so well that he, too, sometimes forgets it is one. The hermit died on a cold morning. There was no fire that time.
He prayed, in those years, to every god whose name he had ever heard. None answered. So he stopped believing — but he kept the prayers, the way he kept the ashes, in a small bottle under his coat.
Now he travels as an adventurer, carrying the ashes of his past, seeking the truth about the dragon within him — while being hunted by dragon cultists who see him as their chosen heir. He does not know which of those two fates would unmake him faster.
